SPPE · System for Preventing Petrol Evaporation

Reduce petrol evaporation at source.

SPPE is a fuel-storage technology designed to reduce evaporative fuel loss at source — helping petrol stations, storage operators and fuel-handling businesses retain more product and reduce VOC emissions.

02 · The challenge

Petrol lost as vapour cannot be sold.

Petrol is volatile. During storage, loading, unloading and refuelling, part of the product can escape as vapour. The scale varies with temperature, fuel volatility, tank configuration, throughput and the controls already in place.

Loss across the fuel chain

Authoritative emission-factor guidance identifies evaporative losses during tank storage, filling, transfer and vehicle refuelling.

Commercial impact

Evaporative losses create commercial costs across petrol storage, distribution and refuelling. The scale varies significantly by application and the controls already in place.

Air-quality impact

Petrol vapour contains non-methane volatile organic compounds. VOCs contribute to ground-level ozone and photochemical smog, and petrol-vapour emissions are regulated across storage, distribution and refuelling.

03 · The SPPE approach

Prevention before recovery.

Vapour-recovery systems capture or return vapour after it has formed. SPPE takes a prevention-first approach designed to reduce evaporative loss at source and complement the wider control measures used across fuel storage and distribution.

Captures or returns displaced vapour after it has formed. Stage I and Stage II controls are established parts of petrol storage, delivery and refuelling.

04 · Evidence

Evidence-led development.

SPPE has been developed through laboratory work, field installations and iterative engineering since 2007.

Customer-reported field result

A 2019 customer letter reported approximately 83% reduction in evaporation losses at one SPPE installation.

Patent history

Iranian patent registered in 2007, US provisional application filed in 2011, and Canadian application No. 3,269,983 filed in 2025.
